MARSKE SAND DUNES

Site Code: None

Wind Direction: NNE

Location: NZ 640228

Access: Drive to the cul-de-sac off the most westerly bend of 'The Headlands'. Park on the road. Rig on the grassy area and carry the glider north to the top of the dunes.

Height: 60ft

Length: 150 yds, but it is possible to jump the gullies and fly the 5 miles to Skinningrove and back.

Description: Grassy sand dunes.

Suitability: Ideal for pilots of all abilities, although the lift band is small and difficult to use. The sea air is also bad for your glider. The site is ideal for confidence building top to bottom flights, and can be flown when it is too windy for the higher sites.

SITE RULES:
Please read these carefully in conjunction with the attached map before flying the site.
        1.     Following requests from local residents, Parish Councilors and the Police - Do not park on the grass. Park on the road taking care not to obstruct access to houses.

Take-off: Take off is from the lumpy, fairly abrupt edge. Find a lump where you can get your wings balanced. The most commonly used is from  directly in front of the stile which gives access into the old church yard. The higher ridges to the east of Church Howle have also been used successfully if difficulties are encountered in staying up after launching near the headlands.

Landings: Top: The grassy area is fairly small, so the best approach is low and for hang gliders, crosswind. There are raised lumps in places close to the edge. As a result landing can be in wind shadow. Be prepared for a fast landing.
Bottom: The beach is fine when the tide is out, but watch out for passers-by.

Comments: There is no official permission to fly this site. A great place to fly on hot summer breezy days, especially if it is too strong at Model Ridge.
Please avoid over-flying the houses and apartments on the sea front (Marine Drive) at Saltburn. There have been a number of complaints from householders to the Police about pilots flying close to their properties.
