Saltburn

HUNTCLIFFE  (SALTBURN)

Site Code: 12.061

Wind Direction: N

Location: NZ 670217 to NZ 699217

Access: Park in the car park of the Ship Inn (NZ 670217) or opposite at the bottom of Saltburn Bank. Walk up the path at the rear of the car park onto the cliff top.

Height: From 150 ft to 400ft (50 - 120m) AMSL.

Length: Approx 1 mile of NNW face to the eastern corner, then a further 1 mile of northerly face giving access to a longer ridge run ESE towards Staithes (See also Marske Sand Dunes).

Description: Sea cliff, sheer at the eastern end but a grassy sloping bank with rocky outcrops at the western end.

Suitability: All skills of pilot, but best for beginners when the tide is out and the beach is not crowded.

Telephone: On sea front pier; or in the Ship Inn.

SITE RULES:
Please read these carefully in conjunction with the attached map before flying the site.
        1.     When parking do not obstruct the entrance to the Ship Inn car park, the slipway to the beach or access to the boats parked nearby.
        2.     When rigging do not obstruct the path which is a public right of way
               (The Cleveland Way).
        3.     Check the TIDE DIRECTION BEFORE Take Off to see if it is coming in or going out.
        4.     Do not takeoff on the grassy area in front of the main town on the other side of the small white fence.
        5.     Do not overfly the large house on the corner of the ridge where the road winds up to Saltburn town.

Take-off: From the western end of the cliff where the sloping edge gives a better launch and close to the beach for bottom landing. Approx 100 yds east of the Ship Inn, NZ 672215. This take off area could be hazardous for paragliders due to close proximity of high voltage power lines immediately behind and above take off. Further along the ridge gives more room on front of power lines but could mean a cliff launch. Ensure that there is sufficient beach to land.
Do not take off from the area near to the cliff lift.

Landings: Bottom: Anywhere on the beach, subject to the tides. At high tide the landing area is very restricted and only at the western end of the ridge.
Top: Top landings are not possible due to the space restrictions, rotor and overhead wires.

Comments: It is fun to fly along to the pier and back, or round the eastern end of the point to the cliffs at Skinningrove - but be careful if the wind is crossed to the west as there is no beach at the base of the cliffs and the return trip may be difficult. Avoid over-flying the houses on the bank and on Marine Drive.

WARNING NOTES
Warning notes are reproduced in this section:

Large areas of this coastline have no bottom landing, so note the following points:-

1. Build up experience of coastal flying before leaving base to explore additional coastline.
2. Do not fly alone.
3. Be sure of the procedure for calling emergency services.
4. Fly with a webbing cutter/hook knife where you can easily reach it.
5. Be wary if the wind is crossed. From Saltburn you may be able to travel rapidly along the cliffs, out over the sea but have insufficient penetration to return.
6. If the wind is crossed the downwind leg will be fast. These cliffs / dunes are not very high, you might not be able to turn away from any obstacles to land safely in sufficient time.

7.     When landing on a beach, stay clear of crowded areas and take great care not to place bystanders at any risk. If it is crowded, shout a warning before attempting to land.
8.     Check tide times before flying. These can be found at the BBC weather website,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/tides/
