HUNTCLIFFE (SALTBURN) Site Code: 12.061 Wind Direction: N Location: NZ 670217 to NZ 699217 Access: Park in the car park of the Ship Inn (NZ 670217) or opposite at the bottom of Saltburn Bank. Walk up the path at the rear of the car park onto the cliff top. Height: From 150 ft to 400ft (50 - 120m) AMSL. Length: Approx 1 mile of NNW face to the eastern corner, then a further 1 mile of northerly face giving access to a longer ridge run ESE towards Staithes (See also Marske Sand Dunes). Description: Sea cliff, sheer at the eastern end but a grassy sloping bank with rocky outcrops at the western end. Suitability: All skills of pilot, but best for beginners when the tide is out and the beach is not crowded. Telephone: On sea front pier; or in the Ship Inn. SITE RULES: Take-off: From the western end of the cliff where the sloping edge gives a better launch and close to the beach for bottom landing. Approx 100 yds east of the Ship Inn, NZ 672215. This take off area could be hazardous for paragliders due to close proximity of high voltage power lines immediately behind and above take off. Further along the ridge gives more room on front of power lines but could mean a cliff launch. Ensure that there is sufficient beach to land. Landings: Bottom: Anywhere on the beach, subject to the tides. At high tide the landing area is very restricted and only at the western end of the ridge. Comments: It is fun to fly along to the pier and back, or round the eastern end of the point to the cliffs at Skinningrove - but be careful if the wind is crossed to the west as there is no beach at the base of the cliffs and the return trip may be difficult. Avoid over-flying the houses on the bank and on Marine Drive.
WARNING NOTES Large areas of this coastline have no bottom landing, so note the following points:- 1. Build up experience of coastal flying before leaving base to explore additional coastline. 7. When landing on a beach, stay clear of crowded areas and take great care not to place bystanders at any risk. If it is crowded, shout a warning before attempting to land. |
